About the game

The Rhapsody of Zephyr was released in March 1998 by Softmax as the third entry in the War of Genesis series and the first of its side stories. It is set fifty years after the Genesis War, on a continent divided between the Geisir Empire and the Pendragon Kingdom.

The story follows Cyrano Bernstein, a scholar condemned for a crime he did not commit, through imprisonment, escape and a long return. The game names its source outright on the opening screen: Alexandre Dumas’s The Count of Monte Cristo. Battles are fought on a grid with a mercenary company, the Zephyr Falcon.

The 2026 remaster was made with the original director, Choi Yeon-gyu, and adds HD and widescreen presentation, voice acting for major scenes, and modern conveniences such as a minimap. It runs on Unity and is sold on Steam.

What is translated

Everything the game carries as text, except the credits. The English and Japanese were produced independently from the Korean, then read back scene by scene rather than row by row, so that a conversation reads as a conversation.

Where a line has no translation the original Korean is shown, so nothing is ever blank. Text drawn inside images and video is artwork rather than catalogued text; it is handled separately and is not counted here.

Names and terms

The remaster’s own data already carries English names for many items and units, and those are used as shipped even where they are unexpected — the ammunition named after gemstones, for instance.

A handful were overridden because they named the wrong thing: a paralysis round labelled Poison Grenade, a master key called Keyer. Character names are left as the developers romanised them.

Supported game update: October 3, 2026 — v.1.0.1802186. Tested game version: v.1.0.1802186b (Steam build 25674418). Official update notice (Korean)

Version 0.4.2-r1 is a Windows installer for Steam build 25674418. It adds files beside the game without overwriting the original game files. Both English and Japanese are included. This revision fixes the installer error reported at 475/525; if an earlier attempt failed, run this version again in the same game folder.

It is a fan patch, not an official localisation, and that shows in places. Some lines run past the box the game laid out for Korean, or wrap onto a second line. On a few screens the original Korean appears for a moment and is then replaced, and that swap can be visible. Neither touches your save files.

The Falcom edition artwork option from 0.4.0 has been removed from 0.4.1 on, in case it raises copyright concerns. The patch no longer includes any 1999 Japanese retail artwork.

Removing it

Run the installer again and press Uninstall. It deletes only the files it installed and still recognises, so anything you replaced yourself is left alone. The game returns to its original state.

When the game updates

The patch checks the game files before installation and again at startup. If a later game update is incompatible, the translation disables itself. Version 0.4.2-r1 supports Steam build 25674418; after the game finishes updating, close it and install the matching patch. You do not need to uninstall the older patch first.

Installing

  1. Close the game completely. Steam can stay open.
  2. Run the installer. It finds the game folder by itself; use Browse if your library is somewhere unusual.
  3. Press Install. Both languages are installed together, and an existing language choice is preserved. You can install 0.4.2-r1 over an older patch.
  4. Start the game through Steam. Open Settings → Graphics → Text language (설정 → 그래픽 → 표시 언어 in Korean).
  5. Choose English or Japanese, then quit the game and start it again. The choice is saved immediately but applies from the next launch.

Known limitations

  • Some text drawn into images and video is still Korean. The title logo and the first two opening cards are replaced; the title card inside the opening video and a few illustrated captions are not yet.
  • Staff and backer credits stay in Korean. These are real people’s and companies’ names; guessing at romanisations would be worse than leaving them as their owners wrote them.
  • Voice acting is Korean. Only the text is localized.
  • A save made in one language keeps the names it was written with inside the file. The patch shows them in the language you are playing, but the save itself is never modified.
  • The bundled Classic Edition is probably not working correctly. The patch is built and tested against the remaster only; the classic mode ships its own separate data that the patch does not cover.

Version history

0.4.2-r1 released Installer fix for the 475/525 error
  • Fixed a Windows path-length error that could stop installation while progress still showed 475/525, with FileNotFoundError [WinError 3]. Download 0.4.2-r1, close the game, and install again into the same game folder. It can complete a partially failed installation; uninstalling first, moving the game, or changing Windows settings is not required.
  • This is an installer-only revision. All 525 translation/runtime files remain identical to 0.4.2, for the October 3, 2026 game update v.1.0.1802186 (observed v.1.0.1802186b / Steam build 25674418). Reinstalling preserves your language choice.
  • Reproduced the original error with the native Windows file-copy API, then verified all 525 test files after retrying the fixed installer over the partial installation. Embedded payload hashes and installer tests passed. Gameplay and layout were not retested for this revision. Other copy errors now report the exact file number and paths.
0.4.2 released October 3 game update — v.1.0.1802186
  • Updated for the October 3, 2026 game update (v.1.0.1802186), tested on v.1.0.1802186b / Steam build 25674418. Older patch versions disabled themselves after the game files changed. Close the game and install 0.4.2 over the previous patch; your language choice is kept.
  • Translated the new save and load errors, weapon categories, and settings for XP, ammunition use, quest markers and encounters. Each language now covers 22,920 of 27,236 catalogued text locations; staff names and backer credits remain in Korean.
  • Checked translation loading and settings in both languages through Steam. Visual layout and a full story playthrough have not been rechecked for this game build.
0.4.1 released Falcom artwork removed
  • The “Falcom edition” artwork option added in 0.4.0 has been removed, in case it raises copyright concerns. From 0.4.1 on, the patch carries no 1999 Japanese retail artwork and the installer no longer shows the checkbox.
  • Installing 0.4.1 over 0.4.0 deletes the artwork files that version added, so the game goes back to the remaster’s own portraits and title art. The translation itself is unchanged.
0.4.0 released Artwork option (removed in 0.4.1)
  • Added an installer option that replaced the character portraits and title art with the 1999 Japanese retail artwork. Removed again in 0.4.1.
0.3.9 released Save names on status screens
  • Completes the mixed-language save fix: status headers like “Meditch’s Stats” now translate the character name even when the game fills in an already-translated frame — a Japanese save viewed in English no longer shows メディッチ inside the English title.
0.3.8 released Mixed-language saves and text fit
  • Loading a save made in another language no longer leaves the character name untranslated inside status lines — an English save viewed in Japanese now shows the name in Japanese, and vice versa.
  • Japanese labels that ran onto a second line (the “もっと大きく” button and the character class line on character cards) now shrink just enough to stay on one line.
0.3.7 released Language selector polish
  • Language selection now lives inside Settings → Graphics as its own row instead of a separate tab, ending the overlap with other settings pages. The three buttons are evenly spaced and the restart note sits right under them.
  • Japanese wording restored to the full forms — キャラクター and エンカウント — in place of the shorter キャラ and 遭遇.
0.3.6 released Battle menu fix
  • The battle command for special moves now reads “Special Move” and fits on screen; it used to be cut off as “Special Attac”. Item descriptions use the same term.
  • Installing a new version over an old one now also removes files that only the old version had.
0.3.5 released Japanese text fix
  • Fixed Japanese text where one kana could be drawn in place of another — ゼファー showed as あファー on the character screen. The fonts the patch adds for Japanese no longer share one glyph sheet between them.
  • The title-screen button for the bundled 1998 edition now reads “Start Classic Edition”, alongside “Start Falcom Edition”.
0.3.4 released First complete text
  • Complete English and Japanese text — 22,849 of the game’s 27,165 catalogued lines.
  • A Language tab added to the in-game Settings window.
  • The title menu and save list follow the chosen language. These strings live inside the game program rather than its text files and needed a separate path.
  • Names stored in an older save are shown in the language you are playing, without altering the save.
  • Japanese font fallback so the game can draw kana and kanji it was never built for.
  • The logo on the title screen and the first two opening cards appear in the chosen language.
  • English, Japanese and Korean install together. The language is chosen in the game, not at install time.
  • The installer is tied to one game build. On any other build it refuses to install and names both build numbers, so an update cannot leave you with a half-working game.

Credits and standing

This is an unofficial fan localization. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or supported by Softmax, Nine Circles Corporation or LINE Games. The War of Genesis series and all of its assets remain the property of their owners.

The patch carries rebuilt copies of the game data that holds its text and interface, with the translation written in. It installs them alongside the copy of the game you already own, never over it, reads the original files to confirm the version, and can be removed completely.

A line that reads oddly, a name spelled two ways, text running past its box, or anything that simply looks wrong. Short reports are welcome — most fixes start as one sentence somebody noticed.
